Why chosen: Elery successfully defended her 138-pound title by pinning her opponent in 21 of her 22 matches, punctuating her season with a pin of Signal Mountain’s Rachel Dagnan in the state championship match.
College plans: “As a junior I am currently still indecisive on what college I want to attend. I plan to maintain my GPA so I can at least be eligible for the Tennessee Promise.”
Quote: “This year the girl I went against in the championship, I had beaten her in a tournament already and it was a quick match. I can’t say that it was less special. It just makes other people expect more from me next time.”
Family: Parents Tina Jones and Gregory Elery; sisters Tatjana (19), Madison (13), Edison (5) and Emerson (1).
Athletic background: “I have been wrestling since my freshman year and it’s the only sport that I took genuine interest in.”
How did you spend your spring break? “With my family; my dad and my baby sisters (were) coming from Yazoo City, Miss., to spend a weekend.”
Best high school sports moment: “Winning my first regional championship.”
