Not much has slowed Gallatin running back Jordan Mason this season.
Gallatin senior running back Jordan Mason has 21 rushing touchdowns in eight games, leading the Green Wave to a 6-2 record.
In fact, a brief bout with dehydration has been the only thing to keep him from racking up yards.
The 6-foot-1, 205-pound senior is rapidly closing on the 2,000-yard rushing mark (215 carries, 1,911 yards and 21 touchdowns) after eight games and could get there on Friday at Hillsboro.
“I’m just truly blessed,” Mason said. “I’m glad I’ve gotten to do it with my teammates. I wouldn’t be able to get it without my offensive line — I’ve got to thank them — and my wide receivers blocking out there just like the line.”
The only game Mason hasn’t rushed for 200 yards was a Sept. 16 victory at Glencliff, where he had seven carries for 151 yards and three touchdowns before leaving the game with dehydration in the first quarter.
Mason owns Gallatin’s single-game rushing record (307 yards against Beech three weeks ago) and the school’s career rushing mark (4,074 yards). He has one more record to chase — Jeremy McMurry’s 1992 season total of 2,220 yards.
McMurry — Mason’s second cousin — held the career mark until Mason broke it in Gallatin’s 49-20 victory over Hendersonville on Oct. 7.
“All the hard work that we did over the spring, to put all that into getting wins, that’s a true blessing,” Mason said.
Iowa State University recently gave Mason — a three-star running back as rated by 247Sports — his first scholarship offer from a Power 5 conference school. Mason also has offers from Western Kentucky, Navy, Austin Peay, Ball State and Texas-San Antonio.
Jordan Mason hit .353 for the Green Wave baseball team last season. He’s expected to start in center field for Gallatin in his senior year.
However, he may be a baseball recruit as well, which could factor into his future.
Mason — an outfielder for the Green Wave — hit .353 as a junior with a .463 on-base percentage, with three triples and one home run. He drove in 15 runs and tied for the team lead with 24 runs scored.
Mason said Middle Tennessee State University had looked at him for baseball, but had not yet extended an offer.
