It was a “catch me if you can” kind of night when fellow 6-4A opponent Montgomery Central came to town Friday to face Creek Wood. Both offenses took yards when and how they wanted. In the end, it would be a missed PAT and an opponents field goal that made the difference in the final score with Indians taking the win 38-33.

“I’m proud of how we executed our plays,” Creek Wood coach Chuck Daniels said after the tough loss. “Defense made key plays that resulted in points for our offense. We never gave up; we kept coming back.”

Creek Wood would never be out of it. Each time the Indians marched down the field, the Red Hawks answered. Even on the last drive Creek Wood pushed back, the Indian defense getting to their opponents 32 yard line before the drive stalled and they turned it over on downs.

Devon Higgins and Quinton Poole were about as good as you can be. And they had to in order to keep up with the Indians. Poole ran 129 hard fought yards on 33 carries. However, Higgins proved that Creek Wood was definitely not one dimensional. He threw for 206 yards on 20 attempts and spread the ball out to just about everyone on the receiving corps.

Here are some key notes from the game:

-Poole rushed for 100+ yards in three straight games. He ran hard up the middle and the Indian defense could only gang tackle to bring him down. He usually fought off the first defender to gain a few more yards and always fell forward.

-Higgins can throw! He has a great arm and he’s not stingy. He threw for 149 yards and a touchdown in the first half and hit 7 different receivers. More air attacks down field are a must as the season goes on, especially with more attention being put on Poole.

-Matthew Davids emerged as a beast for CW at the linbacker position. Big hits and key tackles which slowed the Indian attack throughout the game including an interception near halftime setting up a Higgins to Brent Harris touchdown.

-Getting stops on third down was a problem for the Red Hawks. The Indians kept moving the chains no matter how many yards they needed. Only one drive resulted in a punt for MC and that was the first drive of the game.

-Freshman Daniel Davila is an excellent compliment to Poole. Settling down after an early fumble on the exchange, the 9th grader scored two rushing touchdowns when Poole needed a breather. He’s shifty and hard to bring down with enough speed to get to the corner and turn it up field.

Creek Wood will have a short week to shake off this one as they host Cheatham County on Thursday night instead of Friday due to a shortage of referees.
