“Baseball is a funny game,” Ravenwood coach Teddy Craig said. “That’s just the nature of this game”
With the Raptors (20-13) handing Summit (29-5) just its first loss of the double elimination tournament, they will have to topple the Spartans once again on Thursday to claim the 11-AAA tournament title.
Prior their win over Summit, the Raptors secured a spot in the Region 6-AAA tournament with an 8-4 win over Brentwood to earn the right to face Summit in the championship game.
Ravenwood started the championship game hot, piling on four runs in the opening inning before tacking on three more in the second.
The Raptors really put the game out of reach with a six-run fourth inning, punctuated by a Hagan Severance grand slam.
“I was looking curveball, got it, he kind of hung and I tried to hit it hard somewhere,” Severance said. “It felt good.”
Prio to Wednesday’s game, Summit had outscored Ravenwood 31-13 in the previous four games.
“It’s the district championship,” Summit coach Chad Kirby said. “We’ll be ready to play.”
Hillwood breaks region drought: Hillwood High’s baseball team earned a region berth for the first time in 17 seasons, knocking off McGavock 9-8 Wednesday to reach the District 12-AAA Tournament title game.
The Hilltoppers will face No. 1 seed Overton in the tourney championship game Friday evening at 7 at Overton. The winner will play host to a Region 6-AAA contest Monday (vs. either Ravenwood or Summit), while the loser will be on the road in Monday’s region semifinals.
Taylor Demonbreun had a big night for Hillwood Wednesday. On the mound he tossed a complete game, striking out eight and allowing just two earned runs. He also got it done at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs.
Teron Smith went 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base for second-seeded Hillwood.
