Independence High School senior Patrick Murphy has committed to play basketball at Martin Methodist.
Murphy, who helped lead the Eagles to a program-best 27 wins and a Class AAA sectional appearance last season, announced his pledge on Wednesday, and the 6-foot-4 swing man is set to sign his letter of intent on Monday, April 18.
“Blessed to announce that I’ve committed to Martin Methodist to continue my education & basketball career!” Murphy posted to Twitter on Wednesday evening.
“Martin Methodist offered and after going down there and getting to know the coaches over the last several years he felt comfortable,” added Independence athletic director and boys basketball coach Greg Glass. “He’s a kid who has been in my program all four years and I couldn’t be more proud of him.”
Murphy, who has posted double-digit scoring averages in each of the previous two seasons, didn’t deliver quite as many stat-stuffing performances as his younger brother and District 11-AAA MVP Grayson Murphy did in 2015-16, but Glass is convinced that the RedHawks are getting an exceptional player.
“Patrick did everything for us,” Glass said. “We had four guys averaging in double figures, and, of course Grayson got a lot of the spotlight, but Patrick has been very consistent for us the last two years. He’s 6-4 and an underrated athlete, gets up the floor really well, has good quickness and can shoot the 3-ball.
“They’re getting a really good, complete player.”
While Patrick Murphy is the first of Independence’s three seniors to announce his college plans, Glass said that he expects guard Pierre Watkins and Malcolm Walker to also sign collegiate scholarships in the near future.
“I looks like I’m going to go 3-for-3 with my seniors,” Glass added.
Grayson Murphy, who, as just a junior, became the Eagles’ all-time assist leader and the program’s first 1,000-point scorer, has received scholarship offers from Austin Peay, Lipscomb and Troy.
