SPRINGFIELD There may be some people that question Springfield coach Dustin Wilson’s logic going to a 2-point conversion instead of going for a game tying extra point against Macon County Friday night.

Alan Gardner scored Springfield’s only touchdown in the 10-9 loss to Macon County.

Seth Carlisle had 31 rushes for 101 yards in Macon County’s 10-9 win.
Kicking the extra point to tie the game would’ve been the safe bet, but when the 2-point try dropped to the ground, so did the hearts of the Springfield faithful as the Yellow Jackets dropped the contest to the Tigers 10-9.
Here’s five things that may have led up to Wilson’s decision to try for the win instead of settling for the tie so the two teams could settle things in overtime.
1 – The Springfield football team appeared to be flat Friday night, they just weren’t the same team that put 56 points on Kenwood last week. The Yellow Jackets only had two series in the first quarter and both of those were three-and-outs.
2 – Going into the second quarter the Yellow Jackets had -8 yards of offense. Macon County had already scored its only touchdown of the game, but the Tigers had been driving most of the night.
3 – Macon County controlled the clock Friday night. At times it seemed like the Tigers were milking the clock, and they were a more physical team Friday night.
4 – The Springfield defense had to have been gassed after Alan Gardner scored the touchdown. To that point, Macon County had run 51 plays and Springfield only had 27 offensive plays all night. The Tigers finished with 56 offensive plays including the final fourth down conversion that allowed them to run out the clock.
5 – Penalties and turnovers can costs you the game. Springfield had a holding penalty that brought back a first half touchdown, and the Yellow Jackets also had two interceptions Friday night. Some may think that lone penalty cost Springfield the game, but Macon County also had two touchdowns called back because of holding plays, and the Tigers were penalized 11 times for 105 yards. Springfield only had four penalties for 45 yards.
