CROSS PLAINS – East Robertson volleyball coach Clifton Horn has been at the helm of the Lady Indians program for the last seven years, but coming into Tuesday’s Region 5-A semifinal match, he had never beaten Eagleville.
The losing streak came to an end Tuesday night when East Robertson posted a 3-1 victory over the Lady Eagles.
“This is the fifth time we’ve seen them in the past five years, and whether it’s been in the semifinal match or the region final, I had never been able to get that win (over Eagleville),” Horn said. “I thought we showed a lot of poise tonight, and out girls handled themselves well to get this win.”
The Lady Indians took a 1-0 lead before Eagleville fought back and took the second game 28-26.
East Robertson took the next two sets, 25-14 and 25-21, to close out the match.
“I really thought we were in good shape after we won the second game,” Eagleville coach Kara Leathers said. “Mentally, coming back from the deficit to win that game might have been a little taxing, but overall I thought we were in a good place.
“We just never found our footing in that third game, and that’s not typical of this team. We haven’t seen that all year, but give East Robertson the credit, the better team won tonight.”
For the Lady Indian seniors, the win was extra special.
“We knew we were just as good as they were,” said senior Monica Gardner, who also got the winning kill shot in the third and fourth games. “When we play together as a team, I think that we’re as good as any team we’ve seen this year.
“I know we’re going to have to step up our game from here, but I’m confident that we can do it.”
