SPRINGFIELD The Springfield football team gave the homecoming crowd something to cheer about Friday night when the Yellow Jackets dominated play, handing Kenwood a 56-21 loss.
Dewayne Buckner ran for a team high 135-yards with three touchdowns and passed for 148 yards with two more touchdowns in Springfield’s 56-21 victory over Kenwood.
The win was Springfield second in as many games giving the Yellow Jackets an overall record of 5-3 and moved them to 2-1 in Region 5-4A.
After the lopsided victory here’s five things we learned about Friday night’s contest.
1 – Springfield quarterback Dewayne Buckner proved that he was a true dual threat quarterback against Kenwood. Buckner was 8-15 through the air for 148-yards throwing for a pair of touchdowns, and had 11 rushes for 135-yards with three more touchdowns.
2 – Springfield’s defense was able to keep Kenwood in check. The Yellow Jackets only allowed 295 total offensive yards to the Knights, some of that coming after the starters were pulled. Springfield was also able to handle Purdue signee Antwuan Branch, only allowing him 114-yards on 14 carries.
3 – Dayron Johnson is just a sophomore, but plays like a seasoned senior. Johnson had five rushes for 48-yards with a touchdown, and was Buckner’s go-to receiver when the Yellow Jackets needed a big play through the air, catching four passes for 69-yards with another touchdown.
4 – Alan Gardner got back to power running for Springfield. Gardner ran for 71-yards on just nine carries, good for 7.8 yards per carry.
5 – The Yellow Jackets were able to play clean football most of the night. They only had one turnover, a fumble in the first quarter, and four penalties for 35-yards. All while scoring eight touchdowns on team they could see again in the playoffs. Friday night’s play was a message to Region 6-4A.
