Creek Wood not overlooking winless Loretto

Don’t look now, but the Creek Wood Red Hawks have now won two games in a row.

After last week’s 36-27 win against Hillwood for their first region 6-4A victory, the Red Hawks (3-4, 1-2) are now in position to push for a playoff spot.

Before they can do that, however, they must host winless Loretto (0-7, 0-3) tonight. Despite that the Mustangs have yet to win a game this year, Creek Wood coach Chuck Daniel insists his team is not overlooking them.

“We’re not in a position to overlook anybody,” said Daniel.

“We’re going into it with the idea where we have to execute on offense, and play defense to win the game.”

The Mustangs are led by running back Aaron Presley, who also plays linebacker. He’ll be a handful for the Red Hawks on both sides of the ball.

“Their tailback is as good as anybody we’ve played all year,” said Daniel. “He’s a big kid and can fly. They are also huge up front. They’ve got some big kids and are going to be a whole lot bigger up front than we are.”

It seemed like a few weeks ago that Creek Wood was down and out after a 1-4 record halfway through the season.

The Red Hawks, however, continue to persevere and now control their own destiny for the playoff picture. They’re tied with two other teams (Montgomery Central, Hillwood) for the fourth-place spot in the region, just behind 1-1 Kenwood and Northwest.

“It says a lot,” said Daniel about his team’s perseverance.

“These kids have had every chance to lay it down, because we’ve lost two or three close games that our kids felt like we should have won. Mistakes were made, and that prevented us from winning those games. But they’ve kept plugging away and keep battling. They’ve got a lot of fight in them.”
